Kim Jong-un Becomes First DPRK Leader to Shake Hands with Sitting US President

Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump are currently in a private meeting in the historic Capella Hotel in Singapore. After a handshake in an outdoor atrium, the DPRK and US leaders went into a room where they greeting the press.

Both leaders spoke of optimism regarding their closed door meeting. Donald Trump was first to speak saying:

“I feel really great. I think we’re going to have a great discussion. I think we’re going to have a tremendously successful (meeting)..and it’s my honour and we will have a terrific relationship…I have no doubt”.

Kim Jong-un then stated:

“Past practices and prejudices were obstacles on our way forward, but we overcame all of them and are here today”.

Trump then stated, “That’s true”, before both men went into the private session as photographers and journalists exited.

In spite of a very soldier like entry into the hotel on the part of both leaders, after the initial handshakes both leaders appeared to embrace a spirit of amiability before the cameras. The private session lasted for just under an hour before both leaders met with a bilateral delegation representing both countries.

While this was Kim Jong-un’s first such meeting in front of a pool of photographers and international journalists, he appeared to be very at east in the situation while both he and Donald Trump seemed to embrace the positive spirit of the moment.
